August

August 18 - Aboiteau Wharf
11 of us showed up for an evening of fun and frolic.  Some of us just paddled, while others rolled right along.  For the paddlers it was 10.8km in a light off-shore breeze.

August 22 - St Martins to Salmon River
Well, we’ve had smoother paddles here.  Unfortunately, the weatherman, and Mother Nature had a disagreement as to where the wind was supposed to be blowing from, and it was building up some waves, not huge mind you, but a couple of feet and you had to keep your eye on them at times.  One advantage was that the wind was, for the most part behind us.

Five of us showed up for this paddle, according to my GPS it was 14.8km.  It took us three hours to paddle along the coast from Saint Martin’s to Salmon River, arriving at a high tide.  There was a mixed blessing to all the rains that we had on Saturday, while the waters were somewhat stirred up river wash, there were waterfalls all along that journey.

August 25 – Petit Cap
It was bumpy in the Straits tonight.  We split into two groups, with four of the more-experienced/faster paddlers doing the crossing to Johnston’s Point, and the other seven of us lagging behind surfing the waves, and practicing our wet-exits and assisted entries in rough water (when the surfing didn’t go as planned).  (Personally, I lagged behind and had fun surfing.)  My GPS showed 8.11km, with a maximum speed of 14.9kph – I caught some great waves – the track is full of loops where I paddled out again-and-again to keep on playing.
